St. Teilo’s Community Cwtch

Hurley & Davies Ltd led the transformation of St Teilo’s Church in Portmead into a vibrant community centre for Faith in Families, delivering full architectural and project management services.
The project involved the refurbishment of the Grade II listed church, originally designed by George Pace, and the addition of a new crèche facility. While the exterior appears modest, the interior reveals a dramatic space with asymmetric glulam trusses and an open-plan layout praised by The Glamorgan Pevsner for its “exhilarating internal management of space.”
Now known as Teilo’s Community Cwtch, the centre is a flagship facility offering a wide range of services including homework clubs, baby and playgroups, counselling, training, food banks, and community events. It has quickly become a lifeline for hundreds of families, combating food insecurity, isolation, and poverty with warmth, support, and opportunity.

The centre was officially opened by HRH The Countess of Wessex, who praised the project as a model for community transformation. With over £1 million in funding from the BIG Lottery People and Places, Welsh Government, and other charitable foundations, the Cwtch stands as a testament to what can be achieved through vision, collaboration, and commitment.
